Editorial Policies

Similarly to how it has developed over time, the identity of the “Phaidra” website is mainly a presentation of collections that document the cultural heritage of the universities and other collaborating institutions.

The collections are presented, in varying levels of detail, across different areas of the website. Below is a summary of how the collections are presented in the following areas:

Scrollable gallery

The scrollable gallery is a visual introduction to the website's identity. As it is not possible to show all available collections, we have only provided an initial overview of the content by showing the most significant collections in terms of their visual appearance. A number of images are also included, which, despite not being particularly significant from a visual perspective, are used to represent all collaborating institutions.

Featured collections

Using preview images and titles, this page presents a selection of the most important collections in terms of historical, artistic, and cultural interest. With some collections, when you pass the mouse over their preview image, it slowly circles around the different items of the collection, thus already providing an initial in-depth glimpse of its content. The most recently published collections are highlighted in yellow.

All collections

This page presents the most published collections available on Phaidra. The most recent are displayed first, and each of them provides a preview image and a brief description. You can also filter the collections according to the university they are from. At the bottom, there is a "Search all Phaidra collections" button, which will also retrieve smaller collections that do not appear either on the home page or on this page.

"Static" presentation page of a collection

This page, created by the website's administrator (not via the Phaidra backend), is used to introduce visitors to the collection, helping them understand its nature, history, and any notable features. Its existence is determined by the need to go beyond the limits imposed by Phaidra in terms of formatting and the inclusion of multimedia content. It is only created for collections that have a strong identity, and as long as they are sufficiently extensive. From here, the collection's "dynamic" page can be accessed.

This page is directly curated by anyone creating content via the backend of Phaidra. There may also be one for smaller collections that are not listed in the aforementioned pages.

Notes

To safeguard the site's identity, priority is given to showcasing collections that best document the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage of the universities and other cooperating institutions.

Uploaded files try to offer a minimum level of quality and detail (please refer to section 5 of the Digitisation Guidelines [ITA]).

At least for any digitalised versions of works in the public domain, anyone creating content is recommended to use a Creative Commons licence, so that it can also be used on external platforms, such as Europeana or Internet Archive.

Placing a new collection on the home page and the "All collections" page, as well as creating its “static” page, can only be done after obtaining approval from the Phaidra editorial committee.
